When your child refuses to wear a hat or mittens outside on a cold and windy day, then complains that they are cold, you can simply point out how those items would of helped (then produce the ones that you secretly stashed in your bag). If you do need to get involved, your job is not to decide who is right and who is wrong. You are just simply a mediator. Start the conversation by stating what you have seen or heard. “You seem to be having trouble deciding who gets to wear the fancy dress up shoes.” Have each child tell their side of the story without shouting or hurling insults. Just to make sure they are listening to each other, have them repeat what the other has said. Then you can ask the million dollar question, “What can we do to solve this?” Let each child share their ideas. Try one of the proposed solutions, no matter how crazy it sounds. “OK, we can give the shoes a time-out in the freezer.” If they do need further direction, offer them some suggestions. “Each of you could wear the shoes for 10 minutes, we will set the timer to keep track.” Keep reminding yourself that your kids are practicing the art of conflict resolution. They are expressing themselves calmly, listening, validating other perspectives, and coming to an agreement. This approach requires time, energy, and great patience, but the payoff is well worth it. Doing it every time they fight is difficult. But if you adopt this strategy a few times, they will pick up on it.  And eventually, they will learn to resolve disagreements without you, which is the whole point of being a parent. When your kids are in the middle of a quarrel, check in to make sure it is not becoming physical or emotionally heated. Then let them know you would like them to resolve the conflict on their own (but that you are happy to help out if it becomes necessary). I find myself doing this on a few occasions. Especially when it comes to the XBoxOne. You should always intervene if one of your kids is being verbally abusive (“You are a stupid idiot and everyone hates you”). Another reason you should step in is if one is destroying the others cherished possessions. If they are hitting or biting is another cause for you to jump in. Be aware. Ears, nose, fingers, and toes are the most vulnerable to frostbite. This can occur with prolonged exposure to temperatures below freezing. Some symptoms include aches in the extremities or white or waxy appearance of the skin. It can also have a feeling of hardness. Use warm water (not hot) to slowly raise the temperature of the skin before seeking medical treatment.

Watch the weather. Even being outside for a short time in very cold temperatures can put you at risk. Before planning any outdoor activity, check your forecast. If you are going to be out in a remote area, take extra supplies such as a change of clothes, water, a blanket, and your cell phone. Let other people know what your plans are.

Dress right. Loose fitting warm layers are best for preventing frostbite. Choose wool or high tech fabrics. Avoid using cotton, which does not retain heat very well. Thick socks and insulated boots are a must, along with hats, scarves, and mittens or gloves. Have an extra pair of dry mittens or gloves available to swap out if the first pair gets wet. Be sure to offer your child a snack before he/she goes out for a boost of energy which will warm them up a bit.

Stay dry. Your core loses heat when wet. No matter the temperature, bring your child inside immediately if any water soaks through their pants, coat, or boots.

One in five cases of food borne illnesses happen in the home. Do not let germs crash your Thanksgiving table!

  • Soap up. You have heard it a million times before, but washing your hands with soap is key, because it binds to germs, allowing them to be rinsed off with water. Choose liquid soap with a pump; bar soap left on a dish can harbor bacteria.
  • Wait to stuff. If you fill your turkey with stuffing, do so just before putting the bird in the oven. Leaving uncooked food out for an extended period of time while prepping can increase the chances of germs multiplying.
  • Take its temperature. Cook the turkey thoroughly, until the meat is no longer pink, to avoid the possibility of salmonella. (You can see recommended cooking times at usda.gov.) To be totally safe, use a meat thermometer and check the temperature in the breast of the bird, not the fat or bone, which could be higher. It should be at least 165 degrees when you take it out.
  • Double rinse. Even if you are using a pre-washed salad, wash produce again for 10-20 seconds, because germs and pesticides can linger on the leaves. The same goes for fruits and veggies. If you buy a head of lettuce or cabbage, remove the outer leaves and then wash.
  • Trace your steps. After handling raw meat, clean all surfaces, such as the kitchen faucet, sink, counter tops and cutting boards. Use warm water and soap, followed by a bleach solution. (One tablespoon of bleach to one quart of water.) Make a note of the routes that germs travel. For example, if you touch the raw turkey and then open the fridge, clean the fridge handle as well.

Following these steps will give you the best chance of having a germ free holiday and allow you to enjoy spending the time with your family and friends. Leave us your comments.
